Victorian GLLO Electra Wellens is the sole rider with helmet (under the headdress) in the Sydney Mardi Gras: next stop – ChillOut Daylesford?

The sad pattern of Australian gay print media appears to be repeating itself, with the application by the Australian Tax Office to wind up Evolution Publishing. Will Evolution follow BNews and Satellite into oblivion?

Perhaps, but fear not. Evolution supremo Dean Bell has a brand new company Evo Media waiting in the wings. MCV, SX and the rest may yet rise from the ashes.

Disturbing stories of heavy-handed policing at Sydney [Not Gay & Lesbian Any More] Mardi Gras: one can’t help wondering whether all the police really had their heart in the job this year. Ivan Hinton of PFLAG Capital Territory, said “I know some police along the route refused to hi-five while the crowd and volunteers were great. Clearly some didn’t want to be there.”

At least they’ve improved since the days when they routinely ignored thousands of gay bashings and up to a hundred murders of gay men between 1985 and 1999. Haven’t they?

Ivan Hinton is also concerned about the travellers advice for Russia on the DFAT Smart Traveller website (click on the LAWS tab).. Echoing the language of Russia’s homophobic laws, it says  “Propagandising [GLBTI] among minors is illegal”. Ivan is asking Bob Carr:

Please stop using Russia’s language in describing free expression of Russia’s GLBTI people. It’s not “propaganda” to be oneself and supporting this overt prejudice by perpetuating the misuse of the language is offensive to GLBTI people around the world.

Freedom of expression is not propaganda. Prejudice directed to Russia’s GLBTI community and the risk that this poses to Australian travellers should be addressed factually.

The language isn’t as bad as the filth falling from the lips of the leader of the Anglican Church in Nigeria. Gay Star News reports:

The Primate of the Anglican Church of Nigeria, Nicholas Okoh, has condemned homosexuality and gay marriage, saying they are evil and works of the devil that must not be allowed to exist in Nigerian society.

‘They want to push it down everybody’s throat. And as far as they are concerned, it is a matter of human right. But God’s right is not discussed.

‘I want to say that you have a responsibility to this church, not to allow any influence from any quarters to corrupt our church’.

I think the corruption is already there, my friend, in the form of the white colonial missionary mindset lodged in your head.

And finally, on a personal note, I took a friend up to the well-known ‘artists colony’ here in Eltham at the weekend. Unfortunately, their minds being in higher things, the artists had neglected to fill some potholes in their grounds. and yours truly took a tumble. Nothing serious beyond a bruised rib and knee, and a badly twisted ankle, but it does mean I won’t be able to make it to the studios at Joy 94.9 this week, and there will be no Rainbow Report this week.
