As the bigoted attacks on anything G.A.Y.* continue, and, if anything, worsen, I went looking for some answers to the accusations often levelled against us. I came across this piece by Peter Jones Dela Cruz in the Philippines gay magazine OUTRAGE. He proudly declares, the gay agenda is no secret. He lays it out fair and square.

Yes, we have an agenda, and that is to inform people over and over that being gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, transgender, genderqueer, agender, and intersex is okay; to stop LGBT kids and teens from committing suicide; and to fight bullying, discrimination, oppression, and hate crime.

I have shamelessly stolen Peter’s list of “shit homophobes say”, and adapted it into a quick reference ‘cheat sheet’ of rebuttals: the way things are going, we’re going to need all the help we can muster.

Print, cut out and keep. Turn it into a fridge magnet. Post it on the noticeboard at your office or church. Give a copy to your mother. Every little helps.

Homosexuality is unnatural

Wrong: it may be uncommon, but being uncommon and being natural are not mutually exclusive―both can occur at the same time. Natural selection hasn’t deleted it through evolution. Homosexuality is a natural variation of sexuality among humans and more than 400 species of animals. And those are only the ones we know about.

Unnatural doesn’t equal wrong

The inherent goodness of something isn’t dependent on whether it is natural or not. Tornadoes and earthquakes are natural. Eyeglasses and smartphones are not. In any event, the word is close to meaningless.

Homosexuality is a choice

Science says no: it’s mostly biological. Latest research points to both genetic and epigenetic factors that may give rise to homosexuality, but even if they never pin down a specific gene or constellation of genes, that still doesn’t mean it’s a choice.

Accepting homosexuality will make kids go gay

No. It will help kids (and anyone else) who are G.A.Y.* feel comfortable coming out. That why there appear to be more of us than there used to be. More of us feel safer. Fewer of us feel ashamed.

If everyone went gay, then humans would go extinct

This one intrigues me. Why, and more to the point, how, would anyone become gay? Gay people can’t be turned straight despite the fiercest oppression. Preposterous argument.

Homosexuality spreads AIDS

Unsafe sex spreads AIDS. If homosexuality was to blame, there’d be as many HIV+ lesbians as gay men. Two HIV-free guys can have sex all night long, and the only thing they might suffer from is fatigue.

Homosexuality is a mental illness that needs to be cured

Inconsistent. If it’s a mental illness, it can’t also be a choice. Schizophrenics don’t choose to be schizophrenic. And anyway, once again, the scientific evidence says no. The real sickness is homophobia. Homosexuality can however lead to mental illness: see the next point.

Homosexuality makes you sick

If you put G.A.Y.* people in a family, a church, a school, a society that tells them being gay or lesbian is wrong, then you ask them to live, day in, day out, in danger and under stress, sure, they get sick. Their distress doesn’t stem from their sexual orientation but from society’s intolerance and your homophobia.

Gay’s are intolerant bigots

Anti-gay bigots attack, kill, and rape G.A.Y.* people, throw them out of jobs and homes, and pass laws that harm their welfare. They force many to lead miserable and sometime unbearable lives.

How many anti-G.A.Y.* bigots are driven into depression and suicide every year by Mardi Gras, Pride marches, and gay film festivals? Exactly. Case closed.

We’re not homophobes

If you don’t like the term homophobe, then maybe an “anti-gay as*hole” will do. I’m not saying your opinions are invalid because you’re an as*hole; I’m saying you’re an as*hole because you insist on your unsupported opinions, which are invalid and fallacious.

Gay rights are special rights

Have you applied for a job and been turned down because you’re straight? Has a bakery told you they don’t bake cakes for straight couples? Have you been refused a function room because you said you’re hosting a straight engagement party?

No. You haven’t. And this shouldn’t happen to G.A.Y.* people either. No one should suffer from discrimination, because the right to freedom from discrimination is a basic human right. The government should protect the liberty and welfare of all its citizens regardless of gender, sexual orientation, social status, ethnicity, etc.

No one discriminates against or bullies LGBT people

Really? Then why do the majority of gay people still fear to hold their partner’s hand or kiss them in public? Why do the vast majority of gay people stay closeted at work? Why are there almost no out gay footballers or rugby players? Open your eyes.
