Nillumbik Councillors Say Yes (Privately)

They won’t go on the record, but most Nillumbik councillors are voting YES to marriage equality
Local businesses are getting aboard

Nillumbik Shire Council won’t be taking a public position on the postal survey for marriage equality, issuing a ‘Pontius Pilate’ statement that it is a federal, not a local matter.

However, the stirrer understands from sources close to the council that the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and a majority of councillors will be voting YES.

Which rather begs the question, why do they not have the courage to come out and say so openly? While their votes are welcome (and thank you very much btw), it would be so much more meaningful and impactful if they were to place the weight of their community leadership behind the yes campaign. Disappointing.

Meanwhile volunteers, led by local MP Jenny Macklin and state MP Vicki Ward have been hard at work, running information stalls and providing leaflets and posters.

And the Community Health Centre on Main Road is flying rainbow flags front and rear.

Meanwhile local businesses are also getting on board, thanks to the hard slog of a brilliant straight ally, Peter Veitch. Cheers mate!
